Some of the most powerful moments in this ministry are also the simplest. A neighbor sits down, we find the right pair of reading glasses, and the world comes back into focus right in front of us.
That is exactly what happened at our recent street clinic in Worcester. The gentleman in the video below stopped by our tent on Pleasant Street, was screened for the proper lens strength, and walked away seeing clearly again. What he shared next is something we will not soon forget. Take a minute to watch.
For most of his life, this neighbor expressed his faith through his art. He drew praying hands. He drew portraits. But his sight had faded to the point where he could no longer read his own Bible or see the details in his own drawings. He told us he had been sad and crying earlier that day. A few minutes later, with the right pair of glasses, he could read and see again.
That is the difference a pair of reading glasses can make. For many of us it is a small thing, easy to take for granted. For others it is the line between struggle and dignity, between isolation and independence, between a closed Bible and an open one. Closing that gap, one neighbor at a time, is the heart of our Amazing Grace Eyeglasses program.
Our street clinics are made possible by volunteers who give their time to screen, fit, and distribute glasses with care and patience. The screening only takes a few minutes, but as this gentleman reminds us, the impact reaches far beyond the moment.
This is why we do what we do. Angel of God Mission was inspired by Paul's words to the Galatians, who welcomed him in his weakness "as if I were an angel of God." We believe everyone we serve carries that same God-given worth, and that restoring something as basic as clear sight is one way we honor it. Vision changes lives. We saw it again that day.
